TO CELEBRATE A LIFE

Not Only Remembering but Celebrating …

A Humanist/Non-religious funeral ceremony is a uniquely personal and memorable way in which to celebrate the life of your loved one. I devote time and care in scripting each ceremony individually in order to honour the life of the deceased with dignity, warmth and meaning.

My ceremonies are inclusive and bring consolation to those of you who are grieving - whatever your beliefs.

A few comments from families who have experienced these ceremonies:

… it was a difficult day for us all, but you helped us get through it with some hope for the future …

… you made it a wonderfully moving ceremony and something special for all three generations …

… we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the most lovely, calming and peaceful ceremony …

some more comments

You may wish to contact me regarding your own eventual funeral, in which case we can plan your decisions together.

What Happens in a Humanist Funeral Ceremony?

A typical ceremony will pay tribute to the deceased, outlining their life and character with respect, compassion and sometimes humour. Poetry, prose and favourite music reflecting the deceased's personality will be used where appropriate, and family and friends may also like to contribute during the ceremony. You may like to display photographs, paintings, mementoes which meant a lot to the person who has died. Space will be set aside during the service to remember the deceased in accordance with mourners' personal beliefs.

I will provide you with a copy of the script following the ceremony.

You don't need to be a Humanist …

… to request a humanist/non-religious ceremony! You just need a desire to honour the person who has died with the type of ceremony they would have wanted.

Choosing a Funeral Director

There are quite a few Funeral Directors locally, and I don't make any specific recommendations. However, their prices and facilities do vary, so don't be afraid to 'shop around' - as you would for any major item or service. They are required by their professional body to give you an itemised quote.

If you would like to make your own arrangements, there is some useful advice on the Natural Death Centre website.

Practicalities

The ceremony might take place at the graveside - at a cemetery or natural burial ground. You might choose a crematorium chapel, a community centre, village hall or other public building, even perhaps your home.

If you can, please contact me before the date and time of the funeral are arranged to ensure that I will be available.

I will then visit you and possibly others affected by the death to get to know as much as possible about the deceased so that I can produce a suitably memorable occasion for this celebration of a life.

My fee is agreed locally and within national guidelines.

Humanism in a Nutshell

Its emphasis is on the here-and-now; making the best we can of life for ourselves and for the wider community. We don't believe in gods or the supernatural. Humanists are agnostics, atheists, rationalists, free thinkers, secularists and more. At least one-in-six of us here in Leicester are non-religious and hold humanist principles, whether or not we call ourselves humanists!

Other Ceremonies and Events

I also conduct humanist/non-religious ceremonies for other occasions such as Memorials, Weddings/Affirmations, Renewal of Vows, and Namings, and can give talks or lead discussions for your organisation.
